Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to view and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises around the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice increased symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
